The Madcatter is one of those regattas that people circle on their calendar every year, and for its 50th anniversary (Madcatter 50), Hobie Fleet 204 elevated the event and the overall experience to another level.
Held each May in upstate New York, the Madcatter has long carried a reputation for unpredictable weather. Some years are cold, some are surprisingly warm, and this year, competitors experienced a little of everything, including cool temperatures, rain overnight, and changing conditions throughout the weekend.
The event is sailed on Oneida Lake, often described as “the thumb” of New York’s Finger Lakes region. Fleet 204 has called the lake home for more than 50 years, operating from a launch site directly on the water, complete with mast-up storage and a long history of strong dealer support.
That dealer support has been a major part of the fleet’s success story. South Bay Sail and Kayak (formerly BoatWorks) has supported the fleet since the 1970s, creating a rare and successful combination of an active local fleet backed by a committed Hobie dealer network.
Traditionally, the Madcatter format featured a Friday distance race followed by two days of buoy racing. For the 50th anniversary edition, organizers expanded the schedule to four days of racing with the distance race followed by three full days of buoy racing.
Fleet 204 began promoting the anniversary event more than a year in advance, and the effort clearly paid off. A remarkable 113 boats attended, with sailors travelling from across the United States and beyond, including competitors from Florida, California, Texas, and Puerto Rico.
The event also became a reunion for generations of Hobie sailors. Former fleet members and longtime competitors returned to celebrate the milestone, and organizers made a clear effort to include spectators in the experience with shore-side activities and spectator boats on the water.
Steve Fields – VP Hobie Sailing Worldwide – White River Marine Group attended the regatta, spending time with sailors throughout the weekend and capturing outstanding on-the-water photography.
So, how was the sailing? It’s lake sailing, which means tactical racing and constantly changing conditions. Over four days, competitors saw mostly light to moderate breeze with frequent shifts and pressure changes. Success often came down to finding the pressure and staying connected to it. The race committee successfully completed nine buoy races for all fleets over the weekend. The PRO also introduced several new race management ideas to help handle the large fleet sizes, and by all accounts, the system worked extremely well.
The 50th Madcatter delivered everything sailors hoped for: massive fleets, high-energy racing, and an unforgettable social atmosphere. Evenings featured live music, a beach DJ, and volunteers greeting sailors with drinks and hors d’oeuvres the moment boats hit the shore. More importantly, the event brought together current sailors, former competitors, and longtime friends for a true celebration of 50 years of Hobie sailing tradition
