RCIYC Hobie Fleet – Rosscot Winter Series, October – December 2020

The RCIYC Hobie Fleets Rosscot Winter series came to a close during December. The event started in October with eight races scheduled to finish on the 20th December. Results were taken on the 4 races held due to the extra Covid distancing restrictions coming in two days before the last races were due to take place. Although only 50% of the series were completed, the conditions for all the events provided excellent and competitive sailing for the teams racing in the various Hobie classes, including Wildcats, Hobie 16’s and the Hobie Dragoon Junior racing.

Hobie 16 ‘A’ Fleet:
It was Youth helm Ollie Voak crewed at different times by Ben Fosse and Eddie Slater who dominated the class with three wins out of the four races. This was certainly a fitting finale to an excellent racing season for Voak after his comprehensive victories in the Summer series and Channel Islands Championships. It couldn’t have been closer for second and third spot, two teams were both on equal points after the final races, Aaron le Cornu and Rachael Smith’s first place in the last race of the series broke the tie on countback to give them second over Grant Neale and Karen Larose who came third. Good performances were also put in by Youth teams Owen Harper and Lucy du Pre in fourth and Tom Hunt crewed by Megan McDonagh placing fifth.

Hobie 16 ‘B’ Fleet:
This was very much a two horse race with the fast improving Miguel Arraya and Lucy Chapman winning all 4 races from Mark Mound and Russell Boschat, with the result not reflecting on how close the racing was at times.

Hobie Wildcats:
Jimmy Fullerton and Perry Stone sailed consistently in all races to triumph with a well deserved first overall in the 18ft class, Adrian Jesson and Paul Martin tied at the end of the series with Andy Hart and Michael Kinross, it went to countback with Jesson and Martin taking second due to a win in the last race of the series leaving Hart and Kinross a credible third. Simon Martin and Jonas Ekedahl performed well in the races they participated to come fourth.

Hobie Dragoons – Junior Class:
The racing proved to be very competitive for the high turnout of Cadet teams participating in the Dragoon class. Luke Paxton Garnier and Thomas Allo’s three firsts and a second place secured an excellent overall win for them in the series, Alf Barrowcliffe and Morgan Surcouf improved their positions in the last two races to give them a second by just one point over Will Dengate and Peter Washington in third place. Kai Surcouf with Olivia Forbes sailed consistently throughout coming fourth closely followed by the Willet brothers, Archie and Jamie in fifth place.

Thanks and appreciation are extended to Rosscot Chartered Accounts for their continuing sponsorship of the series and to the Race teams, Safety boat crews and Beach Officers involved in supporting the racing.
