Sylt Sailing Week 2016 kick off on 5th August: Final Race Super Sail Tour – Tourist Open – Sansibar Race and the Hobie 16 World Cat

The Sylt Sailing Week – grown from an 18-year-old tradition of successful regattas of the organizer ProSail Sail events Detlef Mohr and Willy Trautmann – will pull again Westerland on the nice North Sea island Sylt in his spell for 10 days.

Since 1998 there are Hobie 16 events on Sylt. A top level sports program on the water, combined with a lot of activities ashore, also the everyday sailings in the special Hobie 16 sail simulator. The Sylt Sailing Week develops to one of the most important sport events on the North Sea island Sylt. Results and photos are shared by the new media like Facebook nearly on a real-time basis and provide worldwide for the biggest attention.

This year’s Sailing Week also begins with the Final Race. One highlights of every regatta season. The best Hobie 16 sailors meet after their events in Grömitz, Scharbeutz and Kellenhusen to the last big race of the year. On Saturday, 6th of August the colored and spectacular catamarans will complete in exciting Fleetraces the ranking list for the team match race coming on Sunday. On Sunday then the best of the best will fight against each other. Two teams, 4 Hobie 16 catamarans and there will only be one team winning the “Super Sail Tour 2016”. It will be exciting, how the current World Champions Daniel Björnholt with his crew Josephine P. W. Frederiksen from Denmark will race in this challenging area. Daniel already sailed many times together with his brother Nicolaj successfully on Sylt, but for Daniel and Josephine it is a North Sea premiere after China.

The Monday of the Sylt Sailing Week belongs to the “non sailors” and tourists. At the Sylt Tourist Open 8 places will be raffled on the Hobie 16 catamarans. The rush for the popular places is huge every year. The winners will have an unforgettable day with World, European and German sailing champions in the waves of this beautiful island Sylt. After a specialized introduction for the “newbies” they will complete some training sessions on the water, afterwards they will compete in two races. The winner of the Sylt Tourist Open 2016 will be honored at the price giving ceremony.

On Tuesday VIP Teams are in Westerland to sail the middle distance “Sansibar Race”. The 10 sea miles race is an Hobie 16 Regatta for partners and sponsors of the Sylt Sailing Week, without them an event with this big extent would be nearly impossible. They are sailing with the most experienced helmsmen one forward run and the return path. Only interrupted by a delicious brunch on the beach of the Sansibar in Rantum. The winner of the Sansibar Race will get perhaps the most beautiful and most valuable trophy the sport of sailing has ever seen in Germany. The golden 70cm high trophy is showing the island Sylt on a pedestal and has an inset diamond located at the level of Sansibar. The trophy is visible the whole year for everyone in the entrance of the Sansibar on Sylt and is just waiting for a new winner to be engraved.

From Wednesday on the best Hobie 16 sailors in the world will compete in the Hobie World Cat. The sometimes harsh and spectacular surf of the North Sea is not commonplace for many teams and demands uttermost skills. 8 teams, 8 countries from 5 continents are coming to Sylt this year.
The World, Continental and National Champions of the world’s most popular catamaran sailing class will offer the spectators five days several races daily. From 11:30 hours close to the beach, so that any interested party can be close to the sailors. Many races have their finish on the beach where a buzzer must be struck after a short sprint through the sand. The visitor-friendly sailing on this event attracts even tourists and landlubbers. Every race will be live moderated by two professional presenters and daily interviews with the sailors.

The big price giving on Sunday afternoon will be the official end of the Sylt Sailing Week 2016.
Apart from the barely unsurpassable sport highlights of the week, the promenade of Westerland at the Brandenburg Platz is a meeting point for delights like scampi, fish, quiche, hotdog, pasta and sausages. Also delicious drinks and an entertaining show program in the event tent every night.
