The fourth leg of the TOTAL Fiji Hobie Challenge from Funky Fish to Beachcomber Island got away to a flying start for what was supposed to be a two and half hour downwind leg.
Instead of that, we were confronted with a good 18 Knots at 9am and the race developed into a 50 minute screaming reach which was much enjoyed by all. The Fleet arrived at Beachcomber Island well ahead of schedule, well before lunch, to leisurely check-in for an afternoon relaxing on the beach and at the rum bar.
Fiji Team, Epeli & Saimoni, arrived just before Fish (Graham Southwick) and Inoke, who had Mike Montague & Heather Mathews (Team USA) and Murray Peterson & Kathy Ward (Team Australia/USA) on their tail.
A bit of reef dodging on the way saw the back end of the Fleet play catch up, but Fish & Inoke current leaders of the Challenge managed to maintain the 9 minute on the current second place team of Epeli & Saimoni (Fiji), who in turn held their position 2 minutes ahead of Ray & Eminoni (Team Australia/Fiji).
The wind seems to be abating this morning and is currently down to a beautiful 8 Knots and cloudless sky as everyone prepares to enjoy a normal western Fiji day. Today is the last lay day, before the final leg to Smugglers Cove in Nadi tomorrow, a day of fishing, snorkelling and relaxing for everybody.
