The 2024 Robberg Fine Foods South African Hobie 16 National Championships kicked off with over 30 Hobie Cats taking to the water in what can only be described as pristine conditions.
Day 1
With the water temperature a balmy 22°C, bright sunshine, not a cloud in the sky and a light breeze to get the sailors underway, the day could not have been any better.
The first race started just after 12 pm and the sailors will be competing until Tuesday, so get down to the beach and watch as they battle it in the bay. The wind is expected to pick up a bit tomorrow (Sunday), so some good sailing is expected!
Day 2
The start was originally scheduled for 10:30, but with winds gusting to 25 knots, the race organisers have opted to wait until 2 p.m., when the wind is expected to drop slightly. Racing had to be postponed due to strong winds. One more day of racing remains, and sailors expect an 11 a.m. start on Tuesday.
Day 3
The Robberg Fine Foods Hobie 16 Nationals took place in primarily overcast conditions, which cleared later, with a light to moderate offshore westerly wind, making for some interesting racing conditions.
With 8 races completed, Shaun Ferry and Alison Ball have firmly positioned themselves in the lead, with teams Edwards and Lagesse hot on their heels in second and third place, respectively.
