Racing was at Pensacola Beach hosted by the Pensacola Beach Yacht Club was the site for the 2016 Hobie® 16 Women’s and Youth North American Championship. 10 women’s teams and 4 youth teams participated in the championships. Ages ranged from 14 to mid 60s.
The weather was a challenging factor being mid July in Florida. After a gallant attempt to race on Monday the course was abandoned due to weather. Thunderstorms in the morning with a very light breeze in the afternoon. The race committee tried to get a race away but the breeze died.
The race committee managed to get nine races off in next two days. The fleets started together and were scored separately. Although, if the youth women’s teams chose to compete in the women’s they were scored accordingly. It proved to be an excellent way for the young teams to mix it up in a bigger fleet with more experienced sailors.
A Youth Team finished 3rd in Women’s! The youth demonstrated a lot of skill to race against the women. Huge thank you to our Youth Representative Chris Bradshaw and our Women’s representative Robbin Mocarski.
